If you’re looking for a great muffin recipe that’s equal parts cozy, wholesome, and convenient, these Whole Grain Sweet Potato Banana Muffins might just become your new favorite. They’re naturally sweetened with ripe bananas and leftover sweet potatoes. They deliver on moist texture, great flavor, and just the right amount of indulgence. (I especially like the light drizzle of melted white chocolate on top. It’s optional, but encouraged!)

A Muffin Made with Wholesome Ingredients

What sets these sweet potato banana nut muffins apart? It’s the perfect combination of whole wheat flour and all-purpose flour, giving each muffin a great texture without being too dense. A little brown sugar adds subtle sweetness, while the sweet potato mixture and mashed banana provide natural sweetness, added moisture, and a good dose of daily fiber.

Plus, if you have leftover sweet potatoes from dinner or meal prep, this is a great way to use them up in a recipe that works just as well for snack time as it does for healthy breakfasts.

Main Ingredients You’ll Need

You’ll only need a medium bowl and a separate bowl (no food processor necessary) to make this quick and easy muffin recipe. Here’s the highlight reel of the main ingredients:

  • Whole wheat pastry flour for fiber and structure
  • Mashed banana and sweet potato for natural sweetness
  • Milk (dairy or unsweetened almond milk) for moisture
  • Coconut oil or neutral oil for healthy fats
  • Optional add-ins: chia seeds, dark chocolate chips, or even a swirl of almond butter or peanut butter for extra flavor

You can also swap the brown sugar for coconut sugar and the egg for a flax egg to fit your dietary needs.

How to Make Them

The first step is to combine the flour, baking powder, cinnamon, salt, and brown sugar in a large bowl. In a separate bowl, whisk together your wet ingredients: mashed banana, mashed sweet potato, milk, oil, and egg (at room temperature helps everything mix more evenly). Gently stir the wet mixture into the flour mixture—just until moistened. No overmixing! That’s how you avoid dry muffins.

Spoon the batter into a regular muffin tin lined with parchment paper liners or lightly greased with a bit of oil. For bite-sized treats, use a mini muffin tin instead—perfect for sweet potato banana bites the little guy in your life will love.

Bake at 400°F for about 15 minutes (or until a toothpick comes out clean). Let cool completely on a wire rack. Store any leftovers in an airtight container with a paper towel to maintain freshness.

Serving Suggestions

These tasty muffins are fair game for breakfast, lunchboxes, or a quick bite alongside your cup of coffee. They’re a fantastic way to curb sweet cravings while still keeping added sugar in check—especially if you skip the chocolate drizzle.

If you’re like me, you’ll be dreaming up variations next time: maybe adding chopped nuts, folding in dark chocolate chips, or turning them into mini muffins for sharing.

This is one of those popular recipes you’ll turn to again and again. You can rest easy knowing these muffins pack nutrients from wholesome ingredients like sweet potatoes, bananas, and whole grains.
