There’s something about pumpkin spice season that makes breakfast feel extra cozy. This Pumpkin French Toast recipe combines all the comforting pumpkin flavor of fall with the texture of traditional French toast — crisp edges, soft centers, and a warm aroma that fills the kitchen. Whether you’re planning for Christmas morning, a fall brunch, or just want to treat yourself, this easy recipe is made with simple ingredients and comes together in minutes.

The Best Bread for Pumpkin French Toast

The type of bread you use can make or break your French toast. A sturdy bread like Texas toastFrench bread, or thick-sliced wheat bread holds up beautifully when you dip bread into the pumpkin custard mixture. Slightly stale or day-old bread works even better than fresh bread, since it absorbs the custard without becoming soggy.

If you only have white bread, it will still work — just soak each slice of bread briefly, not too long, before cooking. For something a little different, try using bread cubes and baking the mixture in a 9-inch pan for a cozy French toast casserole.

How to Make Pumpkin French Toast

This breakfast starts with a few pantry staples — eggs, milk, pumpkin puree, and pumpkin pie spice. (Skip the pumpkin pie filling and go for pure pumpkin so you can control the sweetness yourself.)

Step 1: Mix the Custard

In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, pumpkin pureemaple syrup, vanilla, cinnamon, and pumpkin pie spice until smooth. Add a pinch of extra pumpkin pie spices if you want even more fall flavor next time.

Step 2: Dip and Cook

Heat a hot skillet over medium-high heat and coat it with cooking spray. Quickly dip both sides of the slices of bread into the mixture — don’t let them sit too long — then cook until golden brown.

Step 3: Serve and Enjoy

Stack your French toast slices high and add your favorite toppings. A drizzle of maple syrup is classic. For an extra treat, top with the homemade whipped pumpkin butter included in the recipe. It melts beautifully over the top of the French toast for even more pumpkin flavor.

Topping Ideas

  • A light caramel sauce drizzle for a dessert-style twist
  • A sprinkle of light brown sugar before serving
  • Real maple syrup and a dusting of cinnamon
  • Whipped cream and candied pecans for crunch

No matter how you serve it, this Pumpkin French Toast is the best way to welcome the cozy season.
