I am such a sucker for a fun, festive holiday recipe. Case in point — this Savory Christmas Torte:

I used to make it year after year for my husband’s holiday office party and according to him, it was always a huge hit.

But another fun festive Christmas recipe that I like just as much is this Marinated Cheese Wreath.

It’s inspired by a basic “marinated cheese” recipe I tested years ago when I was working in the test kitchen for Southern Living cookbooks. Back then, fat-phobia was still a thing, and I remember always thinking how indulgent this recipe was.

Cheese bathing in a dish full of oil was almost unheard of.

Seriously. If you think cheese can’t taste any better than it does on its own, you’ve never drenched it in oil, sun-dried tomatoes, and fresh herbs. It’s the kind of culinary miracle they should write a Christmas carol about.

I hope you’ll give it a try and let me know what you think. Here’s wishing you a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Frequently Asked Questions about this Marinated Cheese Wreath

Can I use balsamic vinegar in place of the white wine vinegar?

Taste-wise, it would be ok. But the look would be quite different. I recommend sticking with a light-colored vinegar.

Does the cheese need to be at room temperature?

No. In fact, the cheeses will slice better if they are cold.

Should I use yellow or white Cheddar?

That’s really a personal preference, visually. The taste should be the same.

  • Author: Regan at This Baking Life

This is the ideal recipe for your next holiday party. It’s a fun way to serve delicious cheese in a festive wreath shape. Your holiday guests will love it!

  • 1/2 cup white wine vinegar
  • 1/2 cup olive oil or canola oil
  • 1/2 cup chopped fresh herbs (such as fresh basil, dill, and sprigs of rosemary)
  • 1/2 cup dried julienne sun-dried tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoon Kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • 1/2 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper
  • 2 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 4 ounces extra-sharp aged Cheddar cheese or sharp Cheddar
  • 4 ounces cream cheese
  • 4 ounces firm goat cheese
  • Crackers and toasted baguette slices

  1. Whisk vinegar and next 7 ingredients (through garlic cloves) in a medium-size bowl.
  2. Cut each block of cheese into 1/4-inch-thick slices; cut each slice in half.
  3. Using a round dish with sides, line up Cheddar, cream cheese slices, and goat cheese around the edge alternating each type of cheese. (I recommend placing a small bowl in the center of the ring to help keep cheeses upright.)
  4. Pour marinade mixture over cheese. Refrigerate until ready to serve (at least 2 hours).
  5. Serve with crackers, as desired.
