Easy Homemade Orange Rolls With Cream Cheese Icing

  • Author: Regan at This Baking Life
  • Total Time: 1 hour 15 minutes
  • Yield: 12 rolls

Inspired by “crack out of the can” orange rolls, these homemade orange rolls start with a box of hot roll mix, so they are easy to make and foolproof. Plus they have a cream cheese icing upgrade!

  • 1 (16-oz.) box hot roll mix* (such as Pillsbury)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup butter, softened and divided
  • 1/4 cup, plus 1 Tbsp. orange marmalade, divided
  • Cooking spray
  • 4 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature
  • 1 cup powdered sugar (about 4 oz.)
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons orange juice
  • 1 tsp. orange zest

  1. Prepare hot roll mix according to package directions through the 5-minute dough resting stage of the directions.
  2. While dough rests, stir together granulated sugar, 1/2 cup of the butter, and 1/4 cup of the orange marmalade in a small bowl; set aside.
  3. Place dough on a lightly floured surface. Roll out into a 14- x 12-inch rectangle. Spread orange filling out evenly onto surface of the dough leaving a 1/2-inch border.
  4. Starting with a long side, roll up large rectangle into a log and pinch edges to seal. Place log on work surface seam side down. Using clean unflavored dental floss, a sharp knife or serrated knife, slice log into 1 1/4-inch equal rolls.
  5. Arrange rolls, cut sides down, in a 13- x 9-inch baking dish coated with cooking spray.
  6. Loosely cover with plastic wrap, and let rise in a warm place and draft-free place until doubled in size, about 30 minutes.
  7. While rolls rise, preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
  8. Uncover, and bake in preheated oven until tops are golden brown and do not spring back when touched, about 20 minutes.
  9. While rolls bake, beat together cream cheese, powdered sugar, orange juice, orange zest, remaining 1/4 cup butter, and remaining 1 tablespoon orange marmalade in a medium bowl on medium speed with an electric mixer or in the bowl of a stand mixer using a paddle attachment.
  10. Remove rolls from oven, and let cool a couple of minutes. Spread cream cheese frosting over baked rolls. Garnish warm orange rolls with orange zest, as desired. Store leftovers in an airtight container.

*The product I used by Pillsbury contains the active dry yeast needed for the rolls. Be sure whatever product you purchase contains yeast.
