This Gluten Free Apple Tart recipe is a beautiful (and easy) way to show off delicious and juicy apples. It’s one of my favorite apple desserts!

Can I use a different type of apple?

Tart apples like Granny smith apples would work well in this recipe because they hold up well when cooked. I prefer sweet apples, though, from a taste perspective. I’d avoid soft apples altogether.

Do you have a gluten-free pie crust recipe I could substitute for the cookie dough?

Note that homemade crusts, either pie crust or tart crust, won’t be as sweet as this crust since it’s made from cookie dough. The cookie crust is my personal preference for this recipe. But I do absolutely love the crust in this Gluten Free Blueberry Pie by my friend Gretchen of kumquat. (It’s a double crust pie, so you likely only need half of the recipe.)

Can I use coconut oil in place of the butter?

I wouldn’t. The butter adds a nice flavor.

Gluten Free Apple Tart Recipe

Ingredients

  • Cooking spray
  • 1 (12-oz.) pkg. gluten-free sugar cookie dough (such as Sweet Loren’s), at room temperature
  • 2 medium (7-oz. each) Honeycrisp apples
  • 2 Tbsp. fresh lemon juice (from 1 lemon)
  • 1 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup plus 1 tsp. granulated sugar, divided
  • 1/4 cup jarred caramel sauce, warmed
  • 1 Tbsp. unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
  • Vanilla ice cream and caramel syrup (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 425°F. Coat bottom of a 9-inch tart pan with removable bottom with cooking spray; set aside.
  2. If cookie dough is stiff, arrange pieces on a microwave-safe plate. Microwave on HIGH 15 seconds or until just softened, but not overly hot.
  3. Arrange dough in prepared tart shell; press dough out evenly to form a crust on bottom of pan. Prick crust all over with a fork; place on a sheet pan or cookie sheet lined with parchment paper or aluminum foil. (This is a good idea as it helps keep any juices from the tart pan seeping out into your oven and burning). Bake in preheated oven until lightly browned, about 10 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack to cool.
  4. Reduce oven temperature to 375°F. Core and slice apples into 1/8-inch-thick slices. Place apple slices in a large bowl, and toss with lemon juice, cinnamon, and 1/4 cup of the sugar. Let stand 10 minutes.
  5. Drain apple slices; spoon caramel sauce over crust and carefully smooth out to edges.
  6. To arrange the apple filling, start at outer edge of crust, and shingle apple slices, cut-sides down, overlapping each other, in concentric circles around crust. Continue shingling apple slices, working toward center of crust.
  7. Arrange butter pieces over top of the apples. Sprinkle with remaining 1 teaspoon sugar. Bake in preheated oven until crust is browned and apples are just beginning to brown, about 45 minutes. Let cool completely. Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a drizzle of caramel sauce, as desired.
