The minute strawberries come in season, I can’t help but start baking with them. So full of fresh flavor, they’re hard to resist.
But per my custom, I don’t want elaborate recipes to make. I want simple, easy and delicious desserts.

Description
This crisp recipe will quickly become your go-to when you’re in the mood for fruit crisps. The sweet strawberries and tart apple in the fruit filling and crumble topping make a delicious dessert. Hot out of the oven, it is wonderful topped with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream. Or when cooled to room temperature, it can be topped with homemade whipped cream. This is a nearly foolproof dessert recipe!
Ingredients
Topping
- 4 Tbsp. melted butter or coconut oil
- 1/2 cup dry old-fashioned oats, rolled oats or quick oats
- 1/2 cup whole wheat pastry flour or all purpose flour
- 3 Tbsp. granulated sugar or brown sugar
- 1/2 tsp. grated lemon zest
Filling
- 2 cups fresh strawberries, trimmed and hulled
- 2 medium granny smith apples*, cored and diced
- 2 Tbsp. granulated sugar or brown sugar
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Coat an 8- x 8-inch square baking dish or pie dish with cooking spray; set aside.
- Prepare the Topping Ingredients: Combine butter and next 4 ingredients (through lemon zest) in a medium bowl.
- Prepare the Filling Ingredients: Place strawberries and apples into prepared baking dish; sprinkle with sugar. Sprinkle Topping evenly over fruit mixture. Bake until Topping is golden brown and Filling is bubbling, about 30 minutes. (Cover with aluminum foil if browning too quickly.)
Notes
*The type of apple you choose is a personal preference. A tart, firm apple holds up best when cooked with juicy strawberries. Sweet apples will taste delicious, but may be softer when cooked.
