I’m kinda over the whole “sugar-free” hysteria. It’s really not necessary. If someone is trying to dial back the amount of sugar they’re eating, there are multiple approaches to take… and going completely “sugar free” isn’t the best option, in my opinion.
The problem is that there are VERY few products that cater to “less sugar,” and especially less sugar by way of no artificial sweeteners.
My View On Artificial Sweeteners
Not that I think artificial sweeteners have to be avoided completely either, but I do prefer both the taste and the natural sweetening ability of erythritol. If you’re not familiar with erythritol, it’s a naturally occurring sugar alcohol, that, unlike other sugar alcohols, doesn’t cause tummy upset. It’s what Swerve is made from… so if you’re looking for a brand name to buy, Swerve is what I use in my fave desserts and definitely what I recommend.]
When my kids were little, I often offered a bowl of strawberries as “dessert.” To make it even more “dessert-like” I always let them dip their strawberries in chocolate sauce.
But you know one thing that bothers me about chocolate sauce? It has artificial coloring.
Artificial coloring. In a brown chocolate sauce.
Seriously. That is like the most unnecessary thing ever.
While I also don’t ban artificial colors completely from foods we buy (this Strawberry Cake benefits from a little “boost” in color), I do prefer foods without them, when possible. (Read “Are Artificial Food Dyes Safe For Kids” by my friend Sally to understand why I try to avoid them when possible.)
So rather than give up on a fruit/chocolate combo or settle for an artificially sweetened/colored chocolate syrup, I decided to create my own low sugar chocolate syrup with input from my youngest taste tester.
We went through three different batches before arriving at this one:

If you’re looking for a sweet treat that’s short on calories, carbs, and sugar, but is a nice way to drizzle up extra yum appeal, this low sugar chocolate syrup is it.
