Frequently Asked Questions About 3 Ingredient Slow Cooker Apple Spice Cake
Are cans of fried apples the same as cans of apple pie filling?
No. Apple pie filling has a very thick sauce surrounding the apple slices. Fried apples are canned in a thinner juice.
Can I use apple pie filling in this recipe for 3 Ingredient Slow Cooker Apple Spice Cake?
I haven’t tested it that way. This recipe is different from ones that you simply sprinkle the cake mix over the top (which to me doesn’t sound like cake; it sound more like a crisp or crumble). This recipe makes the cake batter with the juice from the fried apples. (Consequently, I also don’t recommend using peach pie filling or cherry pie filling in this recipe.)
I have never heard of fried apples. Is it a southern food?
Initially, I wanted to say yes, but ALDI carries them. And they’re definitely not a southern company. Other than ALDI, though, I do typically see most brands of fried apples in the grocery store coming from more “southern” name brands, like Luck’s, Margaret Holmes, and Glory Foods.
Can I use fresh apples in this recipe?
Possibly, but you need to account for the juice from the fried apples. This is such a quick and easy recipe with fairly simple ingredients, I’d recommend making it as-is.
Can I use other cake mix flavors?
Yes. I think a box of spice cake mix would be delicious in this cake.
If I can’t find cinnamon butter, what should I use?
Use 6 oz. unsalted butter and add in 2 teaspoons of cinnamon to the dry cake mix.
Can I add additional spices to this recipe?
Of course! Nutmeg, pumpkin pie spice, ground ginger, cloves, allspice, and additional cinnamon would be yummy and make the perfect fall dessert.
Is this the same thing as a Crockpot Apple Dump Cake recipe?
Not exactly. Most dump cake don’t add liquid to the cake mix to make a batter. They sprinkle the cake mix over pie filling and then put a stick or sticks of butter on top of the cake mix.
Can I make this in an Instant Pot?
I haven’t tried it, but I suspect it would work using the slow cooker setting. If you try it, let me know!
